Yacht Technical Manager
Richard was born and raised on the south coast of England. Establishing an early love for sailing and all things connected to the sea, Richard joined the Royal Navy in 1980. Following graduation from both mechanical and electrical engineering schools, he served aboard state of the art gas turbine powered warships as an electrical-mechanical engineer. Following his participation in a little hair-raising skirmish down in the Falkland Islands, Richard joined the British merchant navy, and sailed for a couple of years with, amongst others, the Free Enterprise fleet out of the channel ports. Tired of dodging a string of actual and near miss accidents involving under-rested crews, whole ships and very large pieces of machinery (which he maintains to this day he had nothing to do with), Richard joined yachting in 1987.
Over the next decade Richard served aboard numerous yachts as engineer and later captain, coming ashore to settle in Antigua for a few years as a charter fleet manager. Relocating to the mid-Atlantic region of the USA, Richard followed through on a long term goal to become an accredited marine surveyor and certified master technician in the disciplines of regulatory compliance, electrical systems and corrosion. In the subsequent years he owned and operated a business dedicated to providing first class, hands-on engineering and support services to extended cruising clientele.
Seeking to gain a higher level knowledge and involvement with regulatory compliance matters, Richard moved to South Florida and has held positions as a technical (project) manager, large yacht owner’s representative and a compliance specialist/DPA certified by both Lloyd’s Register and RINA under the ISM Code.
When offered the opportunity to work with the team at Fairport Yacht Support, Richard readily accepted knowing that Graeme and his team share the common goal of providing a unique and independent service, always prepared share knowledge and to go that extra mile for each and every client.
Away from work, Richard enjoys time relaxing with his family, fishing, sailing and diving.
